Obama and Xi Try Building a ‘New Model’ for China-U.S. Ties



PALM SPRINGS, Calif. — Both President Obama and China’s president, Xi Jinping, said that they were building “a new model” of more cooperative relations after 40 years of diplomatic ups and downs as they wound down a second day of talks on Saturday that included a nuclear-armed North Korea, cyber espionage, climate change, free trade and human rights.
Mr. Xi said he and Mr. Obama “reached important consensus on these issues” when they spoke to reporters late Friday, after meeting for more than the planned three hours and before a nearly two-hour working dinner.
But Mr. Obama cautioned, “We’ve got a lot of work to do to take these broad understandings down to the level of specifics, and that will require further discussions” in the “weeks, months, years to come.”
