Cycling Around The World (Day 158) Athens, Greece

Rolled into Athens Greece today. The weather forecast for the next 30 days… sun. After the non-stop constant rain, cold and flooding in Spain and France the last month the sun will be a welcome companion.
The problem now becomes not weather but roads, drivers and traffic. A city with a population pushing 6 million people one only can     imagine the traffic. Athens seems to be the introduction to the way traffic and drivers will be the closer to Asia from Europe I get. I have spent a day here trying to determine the rules of the road and have found there are no rules only guidelines.
Red lights mean stop then proceed with caution, white lines on the road mean nothing, crosswalks mean nothing, park wherever you like, drive as fast as you can, use your horn for any reason you like and as much as possible, and understand that cars and motorcycles have the right of way. Bike lanes are non-existent as are most bikes. So I use this as my training ground for further travel by bike as I know it will only get worse. The stability of the countries will only get worse as well as there seems to be constant demonstrations and only getting worse next door in Turkey. The city runs at an extreme pace and navigating it is exhausting and dangerous. It’s not only the traffic but internet, communication equipment, the constant charging of the cameras computer and assorted electronic gear becomes more difficult as well the further east I get....
