Recently on stage I shared the story of my reaction to Marc Andreessen’s quote:
“Software will eat the world.”
First, let’s consider how the idea of software eating the world came about. At the time it
was said, the technology megatrends – mobile, cloud, social, and big data – were converging and pushing us into the next wave of software applications, and user expectations were changing.

A couple of years in, work in every industry is being transformed by software – both who does the work and the work itself. Software is enabling fundamentally new possibilities, and work promises never to be the same again.
Where we are now: Mobile, cloud, social, big data
- Today, mobile is not an option. We see mobile first. It’s the primary way people are working. The workforce today is more mobile than ever, and an optimal user experience on mobile devices is critical.
- Cloud is no longer just about agility and hosting software that benefits a fraction of our business constituents. Public cloud multi-tenant architectures are enabling heretofore impossible “community features.”
- Social engagement is now a fundamental part of how people work and collaborate, creating true value for an organization.
- Analysis of big data does not solely represent what has happened in the past. Analytics is now a part of daily work patterns to help us make more informed decisions aboutthe future.
