But the people of Gaza have come up with an unusual take on the viral campaign - asking people to take part in the Rubble Bucket Challenge to remember those killed, injured and displaced by Israeli air strikes on the Gaza strip.
As the name suggests, the Rubble Bucket Challenge sees people pouring buckets of rubble and sand over their heads to symbolise the destruction suffered in Gaza strip over the last six weeks.
On their Facebook page, the founders of the Rubble Bucket Challenge say: "It is a campaign to raise awareness about the war on Gaza where people are bombed inside their homes.
"All people are invited to accept the challenge."
People from all over the world have already begun to post videos online of themselves taking on the challenge.
In one video Abu Yazan, his cousin Hafiz and nephew Khalid are seen taking part.
Speaking to the camera, Abu says: "We have seen the ice bucket challenge in Gaza and we tried to do something that is similar.
"We tried to look for ice but we cannot because we don't have water, and when we do have water we cannot cool it down because we don't have electricity most of the time, so we decided to do it our way.
"We looked around and found lots of sand and rubble and decided to use that for our own challenge."
He asks others who have seen the bloodshed in Gaza to "raise your voice and participate in this challenge".
Thousands of homes in the Gaza Strip have been destroyed or damaged in the latest round of the conflict, which began on July 8.
Nearly 500,000 people have been displaced in the territory where Palestinians, citing Israeli attacks that have hit schools and mosques, say no place is safe.
Israel has said Hamas bears responsibility for civilian casualties because it operates in residential areas.
Palestinian health officials say 2,123 people, including more than 490 children, have been killed in Gaza since July 8.
Sixty-four Israeli soldiers and four civilians in Israel have been killed.
The Ice Bucket Challenge began in America earlier this summer, with the aim of raising money for the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Association.
It was founded by Boston College baseball player Pete Frantes, whose career was cut short by ALS.
Thousands of people, including a long list of celebrities have been taking part, before nominating others to give the challenge a go.
