The Empire State Building is an American cultural icon designed in the
distinctive Art Deco style.
This 103-story skyscraper has been named as one of the Seven Wonders
of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers and was
designated a landmark by the New York City Landmarks Preservation
Commission in 1981; placed on the State National Register
of Historic Places in 1982, and recognized as a National Historic
Landmark in 1986.
From its completion in 1931 until the topping out of the World Trade Center's
North Tower in late 1970, the Empire State Building stood as the world's
tallest building for nearly 40 years.
The Empire State Building is currently the fourth-tallest completed
skyscraper in the United States and the 23rd-tallest in the world.
