Slow and steady might win the race, but it’s not great for a getaway.
Earlier this month, a giant tortoise broke out of a Japanese zoo and made a crawl for it.
The 121-pound reptile was found a little over two weeks later — just 459 feet away
from the park, according to several sources.
(One Japanese paper reports an even less dramatic escape: a mere 164 feet.)
Abuh — a 3-foot-long, 35-year-old lady tortoise — disappeared from Shibukawa
Animal Park in Okayama on Aug. 1. Zookeepers offered a $4,500 reward
for her safe return.

On Aug. 16, a local bounty hunter spotted Abuh in a nearby shrub,
ChannelNewsAsia reports. “We were so relieved that she came back safely,
as she is so popular among children,” zoo staffer Yoshimi Yamane tells
ChannelNewsAsia.
Abuh’s return to captivity doesn’t sound too bad: She reportedly worked up an appetiteduring her adventure, and has been noshing on watermelon and pears
back at the zoo.
Her disappearance and return was a top news item in Japan.
