Scientists have developed new self-lubricating latex condoms that become slippery on contact using a special durable coating.
According to researchers, the new condoms are less likely to break and cause discomfort as they become slippery once they come into contact with bodily fluids.
The research aims to make condoms more appealing, to help reduce the risk spreading of sexually transmitted infections and unwanted pregnancies, and is backed by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Researchers have said that the condom can last 1,000 thursts and remain slippery, adding that intercourse usually lasts half that amount of time (between 100 and 500 thrusts).
A group of 33 men and women were asked to touch and rate the condoms and compare both regular condoms and the self-lubricating ones.
The group recommended the self-lubricating ones over standard condoms, however, they have yet to be tested on intercourse.
Store bought condoms were found to be much slippier at first, however. after about 600 thrusts they began to lose their lubrication.
“A majority of participants – 73% – expressed a preference for a condom containing the lubricious coating, agreeing that an inherently slippery condom that remains slippery for a long duration would increase their condom usage,” the study concluded.
More than 90% of volunteers said they would consider using the condoms an more than half said they would likely use condoms more frequently if these new ones were commercially available.
Boston University’s professor Mark Grinstaff said: “It feels a bit slimy when you handle it dry, but in the presence of water or natural fluids it becomes really slick. You only need a little bit of fluid to activate it.”
Grinstaff has said that more research is needed to see how they compare to regular condoms when actually being used in intercourse and clinical trials will help to reevaluate this. https://www.buzz.ie/health-fitness/self-lubricating-condoms-1000-thrusts-303456
