We tend to carry on this custom today however, wedding favours differ significantly, 
exactly what were the initial wedding favours which were bestowed 100’s of years ago?

In the past, European aristocrats, particularly those from Italy and France, would give each and every wedding guest a sugared treat presented in a trinket box. Sugar symbolised prosperity and royalty and was an expensive commodity. 
The trinket boxes were made of ceramic or metal and decorated with precious stones.

They encased these sugared candies known as Bonbonnieres. Gradually, 
sugar became less expensive and less of a luxury. 
As a result, the principle of giving wedding favours passed on to those of lowlier 
means and so was no longer exclusive to the wealthy.

As time went on, Bonbonnieres were succeeded by almonds and these 
were given to instead. In the 13th century, the almonds became sugar coated 
and were known as Jordan almonds. 
These favours are still commonly given at today’s wedding receptions.

The marriage ceremony of two individuals was seen as a lucky occasion, 
so the bride and groom would offer their guests five Bonbonnieres 
or Jordan almonds as a means of sharing this luck. 
These 5 sweets were to represent health, prosperity, fertility, joy and longevity.

The wedding favour also served as a token of the celebration and still does today, 
something which the guests could retain and remember the day by. 
The sort of wedding favours used these days vary significantly, nonetheless 
the custom still proceeds and is common amongst cultures world-wide.

In recent times the type of favour presented to guests may focus around 
the theme of the wedding and reception or simply relate to the bride 
and grooms way of life, there’s no limit. 
Together with providing decoration for the dining tables, the wedding favours 
might also provide a source of entertainment for the guests or a talking point.

Favours were also given to guests at other events. 
At various other significant events and birthdays, guests were given 
a souvenir of the event. Giving favours was a gesture of thankfulness and 
was a significant part of any wedding reception or special event.

There really isn’t any limit to what you can give guests as favours nowadays. 
Even though the custom of giving a present to say ‘thank you’ to the guest 
carries on there are no formal recommendations to what the favours ought to be.

Αιώνες πριν, ο Λουδοβίκος, βασιλιάς της Γαλλίας έδινε ως ανταπόδοση 

στους καλεσμένους του ένα είδος δώρου, φτιαγμένο από κρύσταλλα, 

που περιείχε καραμέλες. 

Οι bon-bon, όπως ονομάζονται οι καραμέλες, έδωσαν το όνομα τους 

στο δώρο του Λουδοβίκου, που το ονόμαζε bobonierre. 

Η λέξη μπομπονιέρα σημαίνει "ένα μικρό κουτί ή δοχείο για καραμέλες."....

Επίσης, οι ρίζες της παράδοσης της μπομπονιέρας ανάγονται σε μια παλιά συνήθεια της ευρωπαϊκής αριστοκρατίας: Οι πλούσιοι ευγενείς συνήθιζαν να χαρίζουν στους καλεσμένους τους μικρά καλοφτιαγμένα κουτιά που περιείχαν γλυκά. 

Οι πρώτες μπομπονιέρες ήταν φτιαγμένες από κρύσταλλο, πορσελάνη, χρυσό και πολύτιμες πέτρες. Είναι προφανές λοιπόν πως αποτελούσαν ένα πανάκριβο δώρο γι 'αυτό και θεωρούνταν ένδειξη μεγάλου πλούτου.

Παράλληλα, η χρήση του αμύγδαλου ως κέρασμα στους γάμους ήταν επίσης μια πολύ παλιά συνήθεια.Παρόλα αυτά, μόλις τον 13ο αι. το αμύγδαλο καλύφθηκε με ένα λεπτό στρώμα ζάχαρης σχηματίζοντας το γνωστό σε όλους μας κουφέτο. 

Όπως ήταν φυσικό, η βιομηχανοποίηση του προϊόντος έριξε το κόστος παραγωγής με αποτέλεσμα η μπομπονιέρα να γίνει πλέον ένα προϊόν προσιτό σε όλα τα κοινωνικά στρώματα, ανεξαρτήτως οικονομικής δυνατότητας.

Αργότερα, στους γάμους πρόσφεραν γλυκά με μέλι και καρύδια ή γλυκά του κουταλιού με ξηρούς καρπούς που συμβόλιζαν την γλυκιά ζωή, την ευτυχία και την γονιμότητα.Σε κάποιες περιοχές της Ελλάδας προσφέρουν λουκούμια αντί για κουφέτα, τα οποία είναι φτιαγμένα από μέλι και αμύγδαλα.

Συμβολισμός
Ο αριθμός των κουφέτων που περιέχει η μπομπονιέρα είνα παραδοσιακά μονός. 

Τα τρία κουφέτα συμβολίζουν το γαμπρό, τη νύφη και το παιδί που πρόκειται να αποκτήσουν. Ο αριθμός 5, που είναι και ο πιο διαδεδομένος, συμβολίζει την υγεία, τη μακροζωία, τη χαρά, την ευημερία και τη γονιμότητα του ζευγαριού.

Το λευκό τους χρώμα συμβολίζει τις ευτυχισμένες μέρες του ζευγαριού. 
Το αμύγδαλο συμβολίζει τους απογόνους του ζευγαριού, ενώ η επίστρωση της ζάχαρης δημιουργεί την τελική γλυκόπικρη γεύση του κουφέτου παραπέμποντας στις πίκρες και τις χαρές του έγγαμου βίου.

Η σημασία της μπομπονιέρας είναι αντιστρόφως ανάλογη με το μέγεθός της, καθώς αποτελεί το ευχαριστήριο δώρο των νεόνυμφων προς τους φίλους και τους συγγενείς που τους τίμησαν με την παρουσία τους στην πιο όμορφη ημέρα της ζωής τους.
