In the evening of November 19, 1943, in view of the danger of his escape plans being discovered, Jerzy Tabeau made an attempt to leave
the camp together with Roman Cieliczko
(the rest was unable to flee at that time).
Equipped with what they managed to gather in advance: wire cutters,
rubber gloves and a pole with a piece of wire tied to it they reached the end
of the fencing. Using the rod they created a short circuit as a result of which the light was dimmed. Benefiting from the disorientation of the SS men,
who were chaotically shooting from the towers, they cut the wires and crawled into the neighboring BIIf sector. They ran to the other side of the sector, again cut the wires and made their way to freedom.
Running west, they reached the Vistula river which they managed to cross and got away from the pursuers. Then they reached Goczałkowice near Pszczyna, where they remained in hiding in one of the houses until the evening of November 21; that is where they were provided with their civilian clothing.
Then they managed to reach the border station between the Reich and the General Government by train, and on November 26 they reached Zakopane, where they were hiding in the house of Roman Cieliczko’s relatives. In early December 1943, Tabeau got to Cracow by freight train, where he established contact with Teresa Lasocka-Estreicher, collaborator of the Government Delegation for Poland. Cieliczko, in turn, stayed in Zakopane and joined
a partisan unit. He perished during one of its operations.

At the turn of 1943 and 1944, Tabeau wrote a report on the events
he had witnessed in Auschwitz, described living conditions of the prisoners and methods of extermination of the Jews.
The document was sent to the Polish Government in London via
secret channels.
In November 1944, it was published as a “report of a Polish major”
in the brochure published in Washington and entitled “German Extermination Camps-Auschwitz and Birkenau”. Apart from Tabeau’s report, the brochure included also two accounts of other escapees
from the camp, the Jews Rudolf Vrba (Walter Rosenberg in the camp) and Alfred Wetzler, as well as Arnošt Rosin and Czesław Mordowicz.
The brochure contributed in a significant way to spreading the knowledge about the crimes of the Germans in Auschwitz in the Western world.
