Who was the Lady of Ro:

Lady of Ro, was a member of the National Resistance movement and her real name was Despoina Achladioti. During the German occupation period she developed resistance activity but, she became known to Greeks all over as "Lady of Ro" because up until her death she raised the Greek flag on the islet of Ro, each morning, and she lowered it at sunset. In 1927, Kostas and Despoina Achladioti permanently moved to Ro, where they occupied themselves with their livestock, all by themselves until 1940. That year, Kostas Achladiotis fell seriously ill. The fire that was ignited by his wife in order to alert the inhabitants of Kastelorizo and the fishermen in the area wasn't noticed on time. Her husband died in a fishing boat that didn't pick him up on time, in order to bring him to the doctor of Kastelorizo. The Lady of Ro made all the arrangements for her husband's funeral on her own. Afterwards, she returned to Ro, this time with her elderly mother, where she spent the years of the German occupation. There, she offered her service to the soldiers of the Sacred Legion. With "a loud voice and a fast walk", as her biographer Kyriakos Xondros portrays her, she never abandoned the islet, even when Kastelorizo, which was bombarded by the Germans after the signing of a treaty by Italy in 1943, was depopulated from its inhabitants, most of whom took the road of migration. She remained there to raise, up until her death, the Greek flag.
She was awarded by the Athens Academy in 1975, the Navy, the Greek Parliament, the Municipality of Rhodes, the National Bank of Greece and other communities. The Ministry of National Defence sent a naval contingent and a delegation of the Navy General Staff to Kastelorizo where, on the 23rd of November 1975, she was decorated with a medal for the war period 1941-1944 for "national services rended", as was mentioned in the decision of the National Defence Minister. She passed away at the age of 92, at a hospital in Rhodes, on the 13th of May, 1982. Her funeral was held in all honor, paid for by the state, at Kastelorizo while her body was taken to Ro and was laid to rest under the flag pole where she raised the Greek flag.
