Russia denounced fresh threats by France and the U.K. to arm rebels fighting the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and pledged to equip him with advanced antiaircraft missile systems.
The saber-rattling on Tuesday escalated tensions surrounding efforts by the U.S. and Russia to resolve Syria's two-year-old civil war through peace talks. Washington and Moscow are pushing to hold talks in Geneva in mid-July, but the prospects for that gathering are already in question.
