Ο Κ. Π. Καβάφης φρόντιζε να συγκεντρώνει και
να αρχειοθετεί το έργο του συστηματικά, δημιουργώντας έτσι ένα μοναδικό λογοτεχνικό
και προσωπικό αρχείο.
Το Αρχείο Καβάφη περιλαμβάνει χειρόγραφα καβαφικών ποιημάτων, έντυπες αυτοσχέδιες εκδόσεις, πεζά λογοτεχνικά κείμενα, άρθρα, μελέτες και σημειώσεις του ποιητή.

- Το αρχείο Καβάφη περιήλθε στη διαχείριση του Ιδρύματος Ωνάση στα τέλη
του 2012. Εξασφαλίστηκε έτσι η παραμονή του στην Ελλάδα και αποφεύχθηκε ενδεχόμενος κατακερματισμός του. Στόχος ήταν και παραμένει η ανοιχτότητα και η προσβασιμότητά του σε κοινό και ερευνητές, καθώς και η διάδοση του έργου του Αλεξανδρινού ποιητή και του διεθνούς χαρακτήρα της ποίησής του.
Το Ίδρυμα Ωνάση ψηφιοποίησε περισσότερα από 2.000 αρχειακά τεκμήρια που είναι πλέον διαθέσιμα και σύντομα θα εγκαινιάσει έναν χώρο στο κέντρο της Αθήνας που θα φιλοξενεί τη βιβλιοθήκη του αλεξανδρινού ποιητή.
Ο πρόεδρος του Ιδρύματος Ωνάση, Δρ. Αντώνης Παπαδημητρίου,
δήλωσε:
«Επενδύουμε εδώ και καιρό υλικούς και πνευματικούς πόρους για
την παρουσίαση και ανάδειξη του ίδιου του αρχείου
σε ένα χώρο πολιτισμού και παιδείας στον οποίο όλοι θα έχουν
πρόσβαση δωρεάν.
Πρόκειται για μια επένδυση που δεν αφορά μόνο το παρελθόν και το
παρόν αλλά και το μέλλον στην πολιτιστική εξέλιξη της Αθήνας.
Η κατασκευή ενός κτιρίου που η πόλη είχε ανάγκη θα προσθέσει άλλον
ένα διεθνή πόλο πολιτισμικής κληρονομιάς, στη διάθεση του κατοίκου,

OF THE CAVAFY ARCHIVE
An archive open to all.
The #CavafyArchive digital collection invites you to discover manuscripts of Cavafy’s poems, prose literary works, studies and notes by the poet, as well as his personal archive, rich in correspondence, texts and photographs.
More than 2,000 archival documents have been digitized by the Onassis Foundation and they are now available online, while a new building is being prepared in downtown Athens, to house the Alexandrian poet’s Library.
President of the Onassis Foundation, Dr. Anthony Papadimitriou stated:
“We have been investing in both material and intellectual resources for a long time
in order to present and highlight the archive itself in a space of culture and education, accessible to everyone. It is an investment not only about the past and the present,
but also about the future of Athens' cultural development.

AN ARCHIVE OF INCALCULABLE VALUE
Amongst the archival items are manuscripts of Cavafy’s poems, hand-compiled printed editions, prose literary works, articles, studies and notes by the poet. There are also translations of poems and notes of both a literary and a personal nature, not least the poet’s personal archive, rich in correspondence, texts that read like diary entries, photographs, and more. The Alekos and Rica Singopoulo archive – made up of materials relating to the poet collected by Alekos and Rica Singopoulo – forms a distinct archival unit containing materials regarding the literary and art journal "Alexandrini Techni", edited by A.G. Symeonidis and Rica Singopoulo under the frequent guidance of C. P. Cavafy.
- The core of the archive was bequeathed by C. P. Cavafy to Alekos Singopoulo in 1933; the poet left no literary will indicating how he wanted his estate to be managed. Singopoulo initially managed the archive together with his first wife, Rica Singopoulo (née Agallianou); after his death, he bequeathed the archive to his second wife, Kyveli Singopoulo (née Trechantzaki). In 1948, the Cavafy scholar Michael Peridis attested the existence of the archive in his book "The Life and Work of Constantine Cavafy".
- In 1969, control of the archive passed to G. P. Savvidis, a leading Modern Greek literature scholar who restored its unity to a large extent, retrieving manuscripts and other materials that had been separated from the collection. G. P. Savvidis undertook the gradual publication of the material with the help of other scholars (he had already set about photographing the archive in 1963, in collaboration with V. P. Panayiotopoulos). From 1995 onwards, the archive was managed by Manolis Savvidis, who incorporated it into the collections of the Center for Neo-Hellenic Studies and enriched it with both print and digital publications...[...]
