Anyone who's taken a history class knows that the
world has seen its fair share of ruthless and evil rulers.
Using tactics to inspire fear, they secured their power.
Below are just a few of the many, many instruments of torture
and suffering that medieval (an especially cruel era) rulers
used to punish their citizens and enemies.
You’ve certainly heard of some of these, but others
will give you a creepy education in just how savage
things were back then.
NOTE: Some of these devices and illustrations are quite graphic.
You’ve been warned!
Heretic's Fork
As you can see, this device was placed between the
victim’s chest and chin. It gets its name from the fact that
it was mostly used to get blasphemers to repent.
They were unable to talk, and every time they dropped their
head in exhaustion, they’d experience great pain,
making confessions, false or not, very common.
Judas Cradle
The pic says it all. The victim would be suspended
over a blunt-ish point and lowered onto it as their
resistance gave out.
The point would enter them and tear their insides up,
resulting in a confession or, equally likely, death.
The Brazen Bull
This one’s awfully creative for being so brutal.
The victim was placed inside a giant brass bull.
A fire would be lit under the bull and quickly the
person inside the bull would get very hot, then very dead.
The Rat
Yikes!
In this particularly terrible exercise, a rat or other rodent
would be placed in a box atop a person’s stomach.
With no food or way out, it was only a matter of time before
the rodent would burrow through the person’s skin wreaking
all sorts of havoc.
Death by Sawing
All you need to know is there in the pic.
Not a great time, right?
This was done in Ancient Persia.
The German Chair
The person would be tied to the chair when it’s flat,
then it would slowly recline, bending the body…the wrong way.
Yikes! Wouldn’t be long until people confessed.
