Nick Vujicic ..man living without arms and legs

Nick was born 36 years ago with the extremely rare Tetra Amelia Syndrome.
To his parents' absolute disbelief, he was born without arms and legs.
But Nick, and his parents, quickly figured out that if he wanted to survive,

he had to learn how to cope – and so he did. He began throwing himself – literally – head first into every daily obstacle. And incredibly, he thrived.
Within a nanosecond of meeting Nick 11 years ago, I knew how incredible

he was.
He looked at me with a big grin and said, 'Hey Peter, give me a hug!' and

I could just tell he was the most special guy. And that we were going to
have a wonderful and genuine friendship.

Nick Vujicic dreamed of falling in love and having children - and
both dreams have come true
The first 60 Minutes story we filmed with Nick was great.
He was open and honest about his life and the challenges he'd faced.
But what struck me the most was a moment on Miami beach where
Nick told me his greatest fear was a lonely tormented life.
So I asked him what he dreamed about.
He said he wanted to fall in love, to have children, and one day walk his daughter down the aisle at her wedding. In such an emotional moment

Nick cracked himself up. 'Obviously I can't walk!' he laughed.
It's his sense of humour, I figured, that had sustained him.

Nick and Kanae
Out of the hundreds of people I've interviewed for 60 Minutes,
Nick is one of a handful I've been lucky enough to stay in touch with.
In 2012, he messaged me telling me he'd made one of his big dreams
come true: he was getting married.

Kanae, now Nick's wife of seven years,
is a magnificent woman.
She took on a big job, not only as a wife but as a carer for Nick,
but you'd never know it.
She thinks she's the luckiest girl in the world.
Then came the second update: Nick was going to be a father!
Another dream come true.
With that news I was determined we had to meet Nick's children.
It would be an important and uplifting bookend to his original
60 Minutes profile.
Fast forward to this week's story, 11 years after we first met,
Nick is now a doting dad to four beautiful children.
He invited me to his family home and it was truly magical to walk
in and see his family.
I just thought: "You've done it mate. You were true to your word.
You've not only fallen in love and married a beautiful woman,
but you've had four kids – two of them twin girls.
That's two girls you'll walk down the aisle."
But Nick was honest about the impact of fatherhood. He told me how
shocked he was to have fallen into a pattern of darkness because he
felt helpless.
Kanae was doing all the heavy lifting. If one of the kids fell over and
needed their dad, he couldn't help.
There was a moment when we were filming with Nick's twin girls.
Nick said, "Come and give Dad a kiss." And I just thought,
"Wow, you poor bugger. You can't wrap your arms around her."

I think of my own two girls every second of the day.
I love hugging them and giving them a kiss goodnight and tucking
them in bed. And in that moment I found it hard to imagine someone
like Nick not being able to do that.
But as with everything in his life, Nick has learnt to cope.
He got out of that dark place and you can see the joy in his face that
he's a dad.
He kicks a football with his kids. He jumps with them on the trampoline
and swims in the pool with them. He is an extraordinary human being
and an even more extraordinary dad.
How he has navigated being a dad but not having arms and legs, I think,
is a lesson for us all. You just get on with it. And that's what he's done.
Knowing Nick has taught me that no matter what, you can lead a rich
and fulfilling life.
He's a businessman, he's a man of faith, he's got his house,
he's got his wife, his kids, he's got a positive outlook on life.
The message Nick wants people to take away from this story is that
everyone can succeed.
"Here I am, I'm a living, breathing example that you can do it," he said.
As we wrapped up filming Nick made me one last promise, and I'm now
officially invited to his kids' weddings! I can't wait to see him walk them
down the aisle.
Nick Vujicic is a beaut bloke, one of the best. And we should all be proud
of him.

Nick Vujicic with Peter Overton
I first met Nick Vujicic in 2008 when my 60 Minutes producer
asked if I'd like to make a story about an Australian man living without
arms and legs.
While this sounded like an amazing story I have to admit I was a bit unsure

of what to expect.
I remember thinking at the time, "I've never interviewed anyone like that before"

and I couldn't have been more right. There is truly no one like Nick Vujicic
